Tis The Season

Yep its that time again, or well, its coming anyhow lol  The Christmas Holiday Season is just around the corner - in fact its only 38 days away!  As the bedlam starts in search of the ever elusive and popular "perfect" Christmas Gifts, I wanted to add my two cents about this chaotic search.

This year be sure to get an extra special holiday gift!  Be sure to shop LOCAL! Be it a small book store, local crafter, photographer, pet supply store etc.  Be sure to spend your stashed holiday funds with them.  Why? Because those local small businesses help create jobs in YOUR towns.  They help create jobs, pay taxes & also most of them also GIVE BACK to their communities as well, so it comes back to you in its own special way.  As well, those hand made crafted gifts - they are extra special, taking extra time, thought & care in not only their creation but also in their purchase - and its guaranteed to pretty much be one of a kind & uniquely special.  Local photographers photos also look better and are able to work more with you on what you would like in a holiday photo and capture who you and your family really are - and if you have furkids - you can also include them in your fun Holiday Greetings as well; for often LESS than the price of a corporate giant who gives you the first tossed together pose and costs a TON more.  And as you shop at those local shops & crafty places or get your photos done etc, be sure to stop into those small diners/cafes  - you'll often get a better meal for the same price or cheaper and will get to actually sit down and spend some time with your family together.  Remember this money spent stays IN YOUR COMMUNITY and keeps a business running and puts food on the table, gas in the car etc. of a family in YOUR TOWN.  They pay taxes on their home, their business, spend money in other local shops and keep the cycle going, keeping the money, jobs etc. IN YOUR TOWN, not a corporate giants golden lined pockets.

The other part of this special post about the upcoming holiday season is extra special to me too. Its something I not only learned as a child,  but continue to do and encourage others to do.  The reason for the season is not greed or getting.  It is about spending time with those you love & GIVING.

With that in mind, be sure this season to GIVE BACK to your community as a family.  Be it giving your time helping out at a local food bank, soup kitchen, animal rescue group, fundraising, collecting toys etc.  or be it helping out in other ways like putting that loonie in the kettle, or picking one child from the giving tree who wont even HAVE a Christmas without your help; help a family in need by adopting a family food basket, send a Card or Gift Box to a soldier over seas away from their families for the Holidays, send a gift to a child stuck in the Hospital for the holidays, visit a Seniors Home & spend some time with a loving senior who may not have a family that comes to visit for the Holidays, or the number of other really great organizations that truly need your help.  Be Creative! Pick a cause and discuss as a family how you will choose to help them and why its so important to do so.  It is a lesson I promise will stick with your family for a lifetime.  And if you have a person on your list who is hard to shop for - do something in their name - like helping that child on the giving tree or donating money in their name.  There are a million great ways to GIVE this holiday season - it might seem like something small - but to those who receive the gifts you give - it means the world.  Some of my own special memories include always giving to the Giving Tree to children less fortunate & choosing one of our unwrapped gifts to go to them as well.  I learned very young its more important to GIVE, and is something I try to do year round now as well.  Its a lesson greatly cherished and well learned.

Another great thing to do is to spend TIME with those you love.  It might sound corny, but do some fun things, be it giving back, checking out Christmas lights, singing carols etc. Be sure to spend some extra special time with those you love. It might sound bleak, but spend it as if you didn't get another Christmas with them, and make it extra special.  We never know what the future holds and sadly sometimes we don't realize its our last Christmas we get to spend with those we love so create those extra special memories while you can.  Last year just after the holidays, I lost my father to Cancer, I know too well this lesson as well.  Create the memories while you can, you don't always get a second chance.  Children will not necc. remember the toys they got or the really awesome sweater - but they WILL remember the laughter and love shared during the holidays.  I know I still do.

Now, go forth and find those great extra special gifts from your LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES, GIVE BACK & SPEND SOME TIME WITH THOSE YOU LOVE as you get ready to celebrate the Christmas Holiday Season and have an extra spectacular Holiday Season this year.

*side note*
Since writing this article - I actually have added a special section to my website titled "TIS THE SEASON"
it has 3 sections - SHOP LOCAL, SPENDING TIME TOGETHER & HELPING OTHERS.  If you are local to the sunshine coast be sure to check it out for great local shops, artisans and more as well as a ton of great ideas on things to do together and great causes to help too this holiday season!  If you are not on the list - by all means be sure to give me a shout HERE and let me know and I will happily add your business, organization or great ideas to the page!

JM Oliver Photography is Going Coastal!

Well, its officially official!  As of December 01 2011 - JM Oliver Photography will be making the move to the Sunshine Coast of BC!!!  This was a difficult decision to make, but one I am very confident is the right choice for a number of reasons, both business & personal.

As some of you know, I'm originally from the Pacific North West where I lived my entire life, until around 5 years ago when I came to the flat prairie lands of Alberta.  I have a lot of very old friends & family still on the coast whom I miss greatly and will be so excited to see! I also miss the coast and its smells, sights & sounds!

For those who do not know where the Sunshine Coast of BC is, I've included maps below.  The white arrow is where I'll be moving to - Sechelt, BC! I've lived there before and it is simply breathtaking and I cannot wait to get there and start photographing!  You can check out more about both Sechelt, the city I will be moving to and also Gibsons where I'll be also spending a lot of time (its just a little ways away from Sechelt) visiting family & friends as well by clicking on their names which will take you to their websites.

For those on the Sunshine Coast, here are some of the amazing Grande Opening, Referral & Holiday Specials I have cooked up for you all to enjoy!  So be sure to book quickly! They are limited time offers!

For those who are still in the Medicine Hat area - I do have some moving specials as well! So be sure to book them quickly because these specials have an expiration date of November 15th 2011!!!!!

Now I know some have also asked about what will happen to SOS whom I've been working with helping take photographs of and have really enjoyed working with!  I have found another great local photographer and friend of mine who I know is a PERFECT FIT for them - Renee from Striking Poses Photography!
I know she will work well with SOS & will enjoy working with & helping these amazing pups as much as I have!

I will really miss so many of my friends that I have made here like, Kelly from La Crosse Photography, CJ from Southern Star Entertainment, Kathy & Ged from the Sheer Insanity Race Team,  Colleen from Henna Artistry by Colleen Garland, Renee from Striking Poses & Sharon from T's Treasures to name a few!  They have all promised to visit - so be sure to check them out and if you're local - be sure to keep them busy so they can be able to come visit me lots!

So thats a little bit about my big announcement! Ill be adding more about my big move soon so be sure to keep your eyes peeled!

A Fall Afternoon with Miss Kelly & an amazing family

After a very emotional morning at the breast cancer run, my good friend Kelly, who was shooting just up the road from the run, invited me along to do some back up photography for her. Being such a great friend, she knew it was just what the doctor ordered to lift my spirits after an emotionally exhausting morning.

The location was simply stunning, there was a TON of laughter and Kelly and I had a blast doing what we love to do best.  We even got the chance to see several doe around the forest too!  Thank you so much to Kelly from La Crosse Photography & to the amazing family for sharing a ton of laughter & fun with me and making my day end on an amazing note!

Bustin Loose For Breast Cancer Run October 2011

The Run for Breast Cancer this year was extra poingent to me.  Not only was I going to cheer the amazing people at the race on for a good cause, but it was also to honor & in memory of some very special family members as well.

My mother is an 8 yr survivor of stage 4 breast cancer.  Her sister, my wonderful Aunty Judy, was a 26 year survivor of Hodgekins Lymphoma.  My father died last year of pancreatic cancer and his brother, my wonderful uncle Nat, died of Lung/Brain Cancer - they passed within months of each other.  So it was in honor & in loving memory this fight for those with Cancer, I went to attend.  I ended up going alone and I'm sort of glad that I did, because there was a large number of tears shed.

The race began and I thought of all my loved ones, survivors and those who lost their battles.  It was hard to hold my camera straight at the start line as the tears started streaming down my face again.  There was a great turn out and all I could think is how do you thank so many great people for coming out and showing their support for finding a cure to something so many of your loved ones have had to fight.

I heard my friends Judy & Ricochet in my head then.  I couldn't run due to my poor health, but, I could capture the memories from the run for those running in memory & support of THEIR loved ones.  Photography is a family wide hobby.  My father had an old Canon with all the lenses; my mother has the same camera as I do, and my brother has a Canon & a Nikon.  It was a great way to not only say thank you to all of the great folk running, but also a great tribute to my parents.  I know my dad was smiling down on me as I shot photo after photo trying to capture it all.  I have no doubt he would have enjoyed being there at the run & the beautiful location too - which is one of my favorite spots to shoot at.

I took around 800 photos and tried to capture as many of the great folk there as I could.  Then, just before I left, I went and sat on the grass by the lake & fountains and watched the last of the runners coming in, and people mingling after the race was done.  It was a great time to sit and remember those I was there for, as I watched the pink rose petals float across the water.  It was a tearful morning but it was an amazingly beautiful one too.  Thank you so much to the organizers, the runners, the vendors and everyone who was there to show their support!

I'm going to close this blog post with two things:
one is a ton of love & gratitude to my father, mother, aunt & uncle for
all the amazing things they've taught me.

and second is with a poem read by one of the pastors at the end  of the run.
A little something we should all remember......

I read of a man who stood to speak

At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard;
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Be sure to mark those special dates on your calendars everyone!

I've wanted to do something extra special for some special rescues for a while now, but haven't had a chance to as of yet.  So, this coming weekend is it! I chose it because it should be simply splendid weather outside, one of the last glorious days of sunshine and warmth before fall truly kicks in.

I will be doing digital paw-traits in the park that day for $10.00.  This means one photo/one pose and the file is emailed to you so I will need your email addresses so I can get them to you.  All the money raised is going to charity - 0.00% goes to me.  The park is full of fall splendor and sun is due to shine shine shine!  So come on down get a photo of you and/or your pet and even feel free (and please do) dress up in costume for it! Lets have some fun & raise some money for some great rescues!

Saturday will be for the Medicine Hat SPCA and Sunday will be for our special friends at Save Old Souls Senior K9 Rescue.  There will also be a bin to drop off items from their wish lists of things they really could use! In Memory of the 10th anniversary of 09-11-01

I am hoping that I can stop crying long enough to write this blog post that is important to me. As I type the tears are still streaming and my fur-kids are still trying to console me, confused as to why I'm so sad and hurting.

Many of you I know are wondering why this Canadian photographer is writing and is so torn up about an event that happened in the US ten years ago.  Well..... I am also part American.  I grew up in Seattle and spent half of my childhood there and the other half in Vancouver BC.  I carry both full US & Canadian Citizenships and am very proud of BOTH my countries.

10 years ago tomorrow morning, I know I will never ever forget what I was doing, nor for the next week after it happened as well.  I had been lying in bed in the wee hours of the morning , as Victoria BC was where I was residing and it is PST.  It was one of the few glorious days off I had and sleeping in was one of the things I had been looking forward to.  Now keep in mind as well, I have also always been teased mercilessly by both sides of my family & friends.  My American friends/family tease me about being Canadian Eh, and my Canadian friends/family tease me about being American.  I remember it was early in the morning when my friend Angela phoned me and my bf at the time tossed me the phone.  She told me what had happened and at first, I thought she was just giving me a hard time as I groggily told her that was not a funny joke and I was very angry at her.  She said if you don't believe me turn on the radio (as she knew we didn't have cable tv at the time)  I flipped it on and it was on every station.....I sat on the floor in the hallway stunned.  That was my main emotion for the next few days.  Stunned.

Her husband was in the Canadian Navy, Victoria is a Navy town home to CFB Esquimalt.  When she had gone to drop him off that morning, there were armed guards, bomb sniffing dogs and the base was getting ready to lock down.  All civilians had been ordered off the base including the dockyard crews which normally stayed no matter what.  Those dropping off friends/spouses were told to drop them off and turn around immediately at the gates.  No one knew when they would see them again, depending on what all had happened. We were all still so very confused and lost.  After she called me, she drove over, knowing it would be taking a toll on me as well as her, so we drew comfort from each other while we waited to hear what had happened.  So did my bf.  We even turned on the tv even though there was such poor reception but we could get the audio at least.  The toll just kept on mounting and the tears then, as they do now, I just couldnt seem to stop.  I called all my friends and family in the states praying everyone was safe & accounted for.

My moms best friend, who's an aunt to me in every way, travels alot being an waste management engineer so I called my mum to find out if she was okay.  Thankfully she was home safe, her nephew however was not.  Her nephew, was like a distant relative and my brother had recently considered working with him as he was considering the same field at the time.  Architecture. Her nephew lived in New York City.  I hadn't thought about it at the time, figuring what are the odds hes actually in the danger zone, as she told me, he worked right across the street from the Twin Towers.  His wife was 8 months pregnant and had decided to stop in to bring him coffee that morning.  We worried about them for 3 days before they were able to be able to get a short phone call through.  They were alive, the baby was fine, somehow she never went into premature labor - a miracle in itself, they made it through together, although, missing their shoes.  As I made frantic phone calls as bile rose in my throat and fear raced in my veins waiting to hear what had happened, how could this have happened, we listened to the TV.

My friend and I had both been Air Cadets & Cadet Instructors.  She was an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer & Pilot herself.  She listened as I paced, cried and fretted.  Then she jumped up and ran to her truck and brought back a big thick binder.  It was an engineering book on a 747.  She looked at me and said I know what happened!  I know how they got in and I know what happened to the plane that landed in the field.  This was hours before the official reports would state the exact thing she told me.  She explained using the books diagrams how to get into the cockpit - apparently too many pilots had been locking themselves out so their was a fail-safe in place that wasn't generally known about except for flight crews.  With dread we knew what had happened to the other plane - they had to have had a struggle in the cockpit it didn't make sense any other way.  It wasn't long before the news confirmed her conclusions.  As the hits kept coming, the towers, the pentagon, the field .... my world kept getting more and more pear shaped.

The next few days was a blur of a roller coaster of emotion.  We prayed for all the families, for the victims, for the heroes, we cheered with relief as each person was found, and waited with baited breath for more to be found.  My friend the engineer, was deadly afraid of needles, but when the call came in from Red Cross - she called them and said sign me up.  Her husband, my bf and herself could all donate.  I knew from experience given my poor health - I am unable to donate.   Those three days of waiting I cried, I cursed, I prayed, I thanked my lucky stars for my loved ones being safe and I did it all again.

10 years later, I will never forget the heroes, the sacrifices made, the victims lost and their families.  I might be a Canadian Photographer, but I am also part American and have loved ones in the States, including NYC.  I will never ever forget.  And tomorrow I will be likely doing much of the same thing I did 10 years ago.  Cry, Curse & Pray, thank my lucky stars for all I have and hug those dear to me.

WE WILL NOT FORGET!

A Walk With Patches, Toni & Trudy

Last week I was arranging to drop off the CD's for SOS Save Old Souls Senior K9 Rescue, when I got a special request from them to do an impromptu special photo shoot with a very special pup.  The pup is named Patches, and he's a permanent foster due to his age, he's 14 years old, and with him being up there in age, we did a special photo shoot at the ever gorgeous Strathcona Island Park which is a few blocks from my home.

Patches was with his foster "sister" Toni and foster "mum" Trudy.  We had an amazing time wandering up and down the river bank and splashing in the river.  We even started the morning off with spotting 3 does in a nearby field.

Patches is pretty spry for a 14 yr old with Arthritis (he has my sympathy there) and had a blast sniffing everything in sight.  He wasn't a huge fan of the camera, but we managed to get a few cute photos that captured his personality and a couple of him with his foster family too.  Thank you so much Trudy & Toni & Patches too for an amazing morning in the sun on the riverbank with some spectacular company. What a great way to start off the day!

A Great Summer Sunday Afternoon With Miss C & Company

Yesterday I got to spend a great afternoon in the sunshine at one of my favorite parks with a magnificent family!  Chelsea won one of my free Mini Paw-trait sessions during the Can You Remember the Lyrics Contest last month!  Yesterday we did her free shoot with Gunner (a beautiful Louisiana Catahoula), her sweetheart Robin & his son Xanen.  We had a magnificent time playing in the sunshine, watching near by construction workers, climbing on top of tanks and more!

We did a few family style portraits - aren't these guys just fantastic?  They rocked the shoot!

I don't normally photograph a lot of children, so getting to photograph Xanen was a treat!  We had one minor melt down but most the time we had a blast! At the end of the shoot, he told me I was his new best friend :)

The amazing Mr Gunner - a Louisiana Catahoula! So gorgeous! I don't think its possible to take a bad photo of this sweetheart lol

We also did a few couple style photographs while Xanen & Gunner played off to the side with a big stick they found.

Miss Chelsea - the winner of the Paw-trait session - isn't she just gorgeous?

We had a blast and although we had prepared for any Murphey's Law to happen, it went magnficently well and we all had great amounts of fun in the sun & shade too! It will be tough to narrow down which photos I like the best from this shoot there were so many great ones taken! I definitely have my work cut out for me! Thank you so much Chelsea, Robin, Xanen & of course the magnificent Master Gunner for an amazing time & an amazing shoot! You guys did fantastic! I can't wait to do it again sometime!

A Morning With The Pups From Save Old Souls Senior K9 rescue

I was thrilled Friday night when my friend Sharon asked me what I was doing Saturday morning.  I had nothing planned but was curious what she obviously had up her sleeve.  When she told me she was going to be selling some of her terrific Sock Monsters to help Save Old Souls Senior K9 Rescue.....and wanted me to come with her to meet the staff and photograph the pups.

I had been wanting to for several months and we apparently had just been missing each other the way one can in this age of great (and yet not failure proof) technology, so I was over the moon with both excitement and nerves.  The way one is when something you've wanted to do for so long, finally arrives.  SOS really touched me because they deal with not only senior k9s but those deemed for whatever reason to be "unadoptable" by other groups.  No dog is unadoptable.  With the right humans all dogs are very adoptable.  However many times the seniors and "unadoptables" get over looked for a cute puppy instead  So I was very excited to help these very special pups.

It was a super hot and extremely windy morning but it was a fantastic one and one I'm not likely to forget anytime soon.  I think I fell in love about 800 times over.

Here are some of the fantastic pups I got the opportunity to photograph!  All these pups are all currently available for adoption through SOS.  If you are interested in adopting any of these wonderful pups you can contact SOS: by phone: 403.548.7850    by email:  sospet@shaw.ca  online:  www.sospet.petfinder.com or even on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/SOS-Save-Old-Souls-Senior-K9-Rescue/223567154327574

Sock Creatures Invade Medicine Hat, Part Two

This morning I was able to tag along for a super fun and super cute shoot with my friends Kelly From La Crosse Photography & Sharon from T's Treasures!  Sharon makes the CUTEST sock critters ever! And today was part two of their invasion of Medicine Hat! Luckily we all had our cameras to document their take over ;)

First they took over the Medicine Hat Mall! Oh No!

Then they took over the worlds tallest TeePee!

Here are some fun shots of our location shoot at the worlds largest teepee beside Kin Coulee Park - sorry I dont have any of the mall but we had very strict shooting guidelines for that location so there are no location shoot shots for that.

Over all it was a spectacular morning with some fun & silliness! We even got to see some deer & gophers too  that wanted to play with the sock creatures!  It was a blast and I cannot thank Sharon & Kelly enough for a wonderful morning! Remember if you LOVE these sock creatures as much as I do - check out T's Treasures on Facebook and for more super silly and cute Invasion Photos - check out La Crosse Photography on Facebook!

Animal Rescue Groups

If you are a non profit animal rescue/sanctuary/organization and would like/need photos done of the animals in your care so they can be adopted quickly, please be sure to contact me! I will happily come out and take photos of the animals and give you a CD with the digital copies on it & print rights to them so that these great animals can find their fur-ever homes ASAP. I can even post the photos and their information on my F.B. Studio fan page to help find these babies loving homes if you would like.

I have 2 feline rescues as many of you know already, My Sweet Lisa-Lee & Lil Miss Poly-Ana; two great joys in my life that I cannot imagine my world without, and without them I'd not be here as a photographer. I would be thrilled to help your furry friends find their fur-ever homes! So please be sure to contact me HERE if you are an animal rescue/sanctuary that would like to have some photos taken.
